Today, our environment is facing some serious problems because of our activities. The advent of plastic bags, howsoever useful they may be, has resulted in this degradation. Now, the time has come to use those bags that can be reused and recycled, so as not to further destroy the environment—or at least, to reduce the harmful effects on it.
Reusable bags or eco bags are becoming the need of the hour; they are used as grocery bags, shopping bags, and basic carry bags. Not only consumers, but also businesses are working towards reducing the use of plastic bags by recycling them. Eco-friendly reusable bags should be of high quality so as not to hamper the contents put in the bag. Additionally, since eco bags are to be used over and over again, they should have better resistance to wear and tear.
Eco bags are usually made from canvas, jute, cotton, or woven synthetic fibers, mainly because these materials are more durable than the regular polythene bags. Producing such materials involves less carbon dioxide emission, thus reducing in the amount of pollution. Most importantly, eco bags trim down the need for other plastic carry bags. In fact, they are now replacing paper bags that require the cutting of the trees.
Some governments have subsidized the use of reusable bags, while others have imposed taxes on paper and plastic bags. Supermarkets such as Reliance fresh and Big Bazaar now promote the use of eco bags, along with giving information about environmental friendliness and how to prevent pollution. With consumers discouraged to use disposable plastic bags, the world progressively moves forward to reusable, eco-friendly bags.
Apart from the normal rectangular shape of the eco bags, many companies have created designer bags that come in different shapes and sizes. Supermarkets promote reusable bags, and by doing so, they make a lot more revenue. They obtain eco bags inexpensively, and sell them at a higher price. These bags are mostly biodegradable, and hence they reduce the carbon footprint.
Eco bags are safe for carrying food; however, they must be washed often and stored properly, otherwise it could lead to food poisoning. This risk is due to previous materials left in it, such as bleach. In case of plastic, it may wash off onto the fruits and vegetables and eventually lead to food-borne illnesses. It is, therefore, highly advised to use fabric-based reusable bags as much as possible the next time you go shopping.
