On the other hand, simulated diamonds are created using other materials, such as high-leaded glass, moissanite, strontium titanate, or synthetic rutile. The result is therefore not a real diamond, but something which looks very much like it.

Hardness. This is another significant difference. Synthetic diamonds, because they are made from pure carbon, has the exact same hardness as a natural diamond, which according to the Mohs scale of mineral hardness, ranks as a 10. However, synthetic diamonds can have varying hardness as well depending on how they were processed. Some are even harder than natural diamonds. On the other hand, simulated diamonds will fall far below 10, the exact hardness depending on their exact composition. But in general, they will still be harder than most gemstones.

Thermal and electrical conductivity. This implies how well they conduct heat and electricity. Natural diamond conducts heat very well, but acts as an electrical insulator. This is mainly due to the carbon content. Since synthetic diamonds also has the same amount of carbon, they also conduct heat but not electricity. In contrast, simulated diamonds are mostly thermal insulators, with the exception of moissanite. They can also conduct electricity better than their synthetic cousins.
